Remembering the Tattered Cover
After my two years in Minnesota, I went to a book signing with a friend and discovered the Tattered Cover bookstore in Cherry Creek (Colorado). Soon Michele and I were married and we loved to travel down to Denver just to visit this mecca of manuscripts.
Our kids probably aren’t aware of it, but this store had a profound effect on our family. I discovered a fantastic book for an aspiring graphic designer, Frederick Goudy, by D.J.R. Bruckner. Our three children each were given a name from a typeface cataloged in this book… Kennerley, Berkeley, and Quinan.
It’s been a long time since we lived in Colorado, and just as long since we frequented the Tattered Cover. But we’ve found that same book store magic here in Las Vegas. It’s The Never Ending Story. This book store doesn’t have a catalog of 150,000 titles in stock. It’s not part of a franchise. It caters just a single type of reader (children), yet it’s amazing place — for children of all ages.
We discover a new and fantastic treasure almost every time we visit. Two of my personal favorites (that I got for Quinan) are Tools and Ton by Japanese illustrator Taro Miura.
Kenn and Jen are voracious readers and whenever they are ready for something new to read, the Book Divas are ready with numerous suggestions tailored to our families values and tastes. They also offer our girls AR copies making us feel extra special for getting an exclusive look at upcoming books.
We even shop at the NeverEnding Story for presents, and it’s no surprise that the gifts we pick become loved presents. even by our young twin cousins (pictured above).
In this age of endless corporate franchises, there are only a few stores we absolutely love, and the Never Ending Story is at the top of the list.

I too love stores like that. It is especially cool when you get to know the people that work there and they are happy to see you! Too bad big box stores have put so many mom and pop shops out of business
