Big Falls Hike

Friday (August 10th) I went for a short overnight backpacking trip with the scouts. Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures because my batteries and spare batteries didn’t have a charge.

Two years ago in October of 2005 I went with (now older) scouts on the same little trip. The hike was challenging with a series of scrambling, running water and all the flora you would expect to see at Mt. Charleston (including my childhood favorites of Ponderosa and Aspen). Just before reaching the falls we found an unexpected large snowfield with a cave (more like a tunnel) melted underneath the center. The field was rather large (for Nevada) about the size of half a football field. You can see a few scouts hiking through in the photo below. Big Falls was also fun and I was surprised that it still had a little water flowing (remember this was October). All in all it was a great trip.

Because the large size of the snowfield I was expecting to see at least a little bit left. Unfortunately there was no trace that a snowfield ever existed… even the falls were dry (except for some wet marks high on the rocks).

I still would recommend the Big Falls hike to anyone that doesn’t mind a little scrambling. But don’t expect to see much water (unless your hiking on spring (I’m guessing late April would be best). I keep wondering in the back of my mind if the lack of water is seasonal or if it could be related to climate change.

The scouts this year were really quick and we bagged Mary Jane Falls on the way back. All in all a productive weekend.
