Springs Preserve
Today we recreated at Springs Preserve here in Las Vegas. The kids are pictured above waiting for the flash flood simulator to start. We had a great time hiking and exploring a few place we hadn’t visited before (and a few we had). The favorite was the sustainability center. Unfortunately it was pretty humid today with the high around 105°. We’ll probably wait to go back until the temperature cools down… possibly late September or mid October.

Comments
Oops, my face is red from embarrassment… I forgot comment moderation is turned on and many of our great family members left comments (Doug & Becky , Tiffany , Marva , Kim and Tiffany again ) that didn’t get published.
This has been fixed (I hope).

Pidgeons
I don’t mind pidgeons.
But I do mind the excrement that they leave behind.

Iron Chef
Michele has started a couple traditions.
First she waits to go grocery shopping until she needs to. This is a change from shopping same time and day every week. This cuts down on waste and helps us turn our inventory over better.
Second, she’s started Iron Chef at our house. This happens when the selection of food to cook from is dwindling and Michele hasn’t yet gone to the store. Basically whoever “gets” to cook dinner — Tonight was Kenn and I — has to find ingredients that are remaning and put them together in new and exciting combinations.
Tonight Kenn and I cooked up, chicken breasts filets, with a cheese (soup) sauce, topped with peas and served on a bed of angel hair pasta. The side was cheddar-garlic bread from Great Harvest slightly broiled with freshly grated cheddar on top.
Bone appiteet.

The Napping House
Just finished reading The Napping House to Jen and Quinan. Now it’s time for all of us to take a long nap.

Big Falls Hike
Friday (August 10th) I went for a short overnight backpacking trip with the scouts. Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures because my batteries and spare batteries didn’t have a charge.
Two years ago in October of 2005 I went with (now older) scouts on the same little trip. The hike was challenging with a series of scrambling, running water and all the flora you would expect to see at Mt. Charleston (including my childhood favorites of Ponderosa and Aspen). Just before reaching the falls we found an unexpected large snowfield with a cave (more like a tunnel) melted underneath the center. The field was rather large (for Nevada) about the size of half a football field. You can see a few scouts hiking through in the photo below. Big Falls was also fun and I was surprised that it still had a little water flowing (remember this was October). All in all it was a great trip.
Because the large size of the snowfield I was expecting to see at least a little bit left. Unfortunately there was no trace that a snowfield ever existed… even the falls were dry (except for some wet marks high on the rocks).
I still would recommend the Big Falls hike to anyone that doesn’t mind a little scrambling. But don’t expect to see much water (unless your hiking on spring (I’m guessing late April would be best). I keep wondering in the back of my mind if the lack of water is seasonal or if it could be related to climate change.
The scouts this year were really quick and we bagged Mary Jane Falls on the way back. All in all a productive weekend.
