2 Nephi 22

For family scripture study today we are choosing a verse from 2 Nephi 22 (Isaiah 12) and writing a poem (or rewriting the verse in (modern) poetic form. For example, verse 5…

Forget your bling
and begin to sing,
in His name,
the Holy King.

Happy Working Song

This is my favorite scene in the movie “Enchanted” when what’s-her-name cleans what’s-his-name’s home. I think Disney shows a lot of maturity to poke fun on themselves throughout the movie and break a few of the princess movie rules.

50 Miler

I ran 2.5 miles today at an average pace (for me). Pretty uneventful, except that I just passed the 50 mile mark!

I love the 13 week run/walk program and Nike+iPod.

I LOVE RUNNING!

Today I ran 5-1-8, for those (few) of you who are not running, that’s week 6 — session 1, run 5 minutes, walk 1 minute, 8 times.

Hugh running.

Although the first 24 minutes wasn’t easy, it sure didn’t kill me. About halfway through I finally felt warmed up… started to look at the clouds… and drifted into the zone (which is a good thing)… calming endorphins… ah…

I listened to President Eyring and Elder Cook with my modified General Conference podcast. There just something about physical strains of running that opens the mind and heart to simple phrases and thoughts that I would otherwise forget, such as this quote from President Eyring’s talk:

“I wrote down a few lines every day for years. I never missed a day no matter how tired I was or how early I would have to start the next day. Before I would write, I would ponder this question: “Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?” As I kept at it, something began to happen. As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. As that happened, and it happened often, I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done.”

That’s something I need to do. Maybe this medium is a way to accomplish it. I’ll have to ponder that. Doug is a great albeit delayed example of this.

Anyways, I’m completely amazed that I was able to run 40 minutes with only 8 little one-minute breaks (and live to tell about it). I’m glad the next session is only 2-1-10. I’m still a slow runner (yes, that’s called a jogger), but my pace is improving and Lance Armstrong even told me I had my longest workout yet.

Remembering the Tattered Cover

After my two years in Minnesota, I went to a book signing with a friend and discovered the Tattered Cover bookstore in Cherry Creek (Colorado). Soon Michele and I were married and we loved to travel down to Denver just to visit this mecca of manuscripts.

Our kids probably aren’t aware of it, but this store had a profound effect on our family. I discovered a fantastic book for an aspiring graphic designer, Frederick Goudy, by D.J.R. Bruckner. Our three children each were given a name from a typeface cataloged in this book… Kennerley, Berkeley, and Quinan.

It’s been a long time since we lived in Colorado, and just as long since we frequented the Tattered Cover. But we’ve found that same book store magic here in Las Vegas. It’s The Never Ending Story. This book store doesn’t have a catalog of 150,000 titles in stock. It’s not part of a franchise. It caters just a single type of reader (children), yet it’s amazing place — for children of all ages.

We discover a new and fantastic treasure almost every time we visit. Two of my personal favorites (that I got for Quinan) are Tools and Ton by Japanese illustrator Taro Miura.

Kenn and Jen are voracious readers and whenever they are ready for something new to read, the Book Divas are ready with numerous suggestions tailored to our families values and tastes. They also offer our girls AR copies making us feel extra special for getting an exclusive look at upcoming books.

We even shop at the NeverEnding Story for presents, and it’s no surprise that the gifts we pick become loved presents. even by our young twin cousins (pictured above).

In this age of endless corporate franchises, there are only a few stores we absolutely love, and the Never Ending Story is at the top of the list.
